چکیده

This paper evaluates the performance of the HPC Challenge benchmarks in several virtual environments, including VMware, KVM and VirtualBox. The HPC Challenge benchmarks consist of a suite of tests that examine the performance of HPC architectures using kernels with memory access patterns more challenging than those of the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark used in the TOP500 list. The tests include four local (matrix-matrix multiply, STREAM, RandomAccess and FFT) and four global (High Performance Linpack – HPL, parallel matrix transpose – PTRANS, RandomAccess and FFT) kernel benchmarks. The purpose of our experiments is to evaluate the overheads of the different virtual environments and investigate how different aspects of the system are affected by virtualization. We ran the benchmarks on an 8core system with Core i7 processors using Open MPI. We did runs on the bare hardware and in each of the virtual environments for a range of problem sizes. As expected, the HPL results had some overhead in all the virtual environments, with the overhead becoming less significant with larger problem sizes. The RandomAccess results show drastically different behavior and we attempt to explain it with pertinent experiments. We show the cause of variability of performance results as well as major causes of measurement error.

Performance analysis of HPC applications in the cloud

The scalability of High Performance Computing (HPC) applications depends heavily on the efficient support of network communications in virtualized environments. However, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers are more focused on deploying systems with higher computational power interconnected via high-speed networks rather than improving the scalability of the communication middleware. Th...

Performance Evaluation of HPC Benchmarks on VMware's ESXi Server

A major obstacle to virtualizing HPC workloads is a concern about the performance loss due to virtualization. We will demonstrate that new features significantly enhance the performance and scalability of virtualized HPC workloads on VMware’s virtualization platform. Specifically, we will discuss VMware’s ESXi Server performance for virtual machines with up to 64 virtual CPUs as well as support...

Xen2MX: High-performance communication in virtualized environments

Cloud computing infrastructures provide vast processing power and host a diverse set of computing workloads, ranging from service-oriented deployments to HighPerformance Computing (HPC) applications. As HPC applications scale to a large number of VMs, providing near-native network I/O performance to each peer VM is an important challenge. In this paper we present Xen2MX, a paravirtual interconn...

Paravirtualization for Hpc Systems * Ucsb Computer Science Technical Report Number 2006-10

Virtualization has become increasingly popular for enabling full system isolation, load balancing, and hardware multiplexing. This wide-spread use is the result of novel techniques such as paravirtualization that make virtualization systems practical and efficient. Paravirtualizing systems export an interface that is slightly different from the underlying hardware but that significantly streaml...

Towards a Lightweight RDMA Para-Virtualization for HPC

Virtualization has gained increasing attention in the recent High Performance Computing (HPC) development. While HPC provides scalability and computing performance, HPC in the cloud benefits in addition from the agility and flexibility that virtualization brings. One of the major challenges of HPC in virtualized environments is RDMA virtualization. Existing implementations of RDMA virtualizatio...
